  • Be ready for the discussion and decision making being more difficult and tiring, and taking longer than you might expect
  • Prepare thoroughly
  • Make sure you are clear about the start time and the venue
  • Be positive, confident and optimistic
  • Maintain an open mind
  • Avoid anxiety by realising that an outcome cannot be imposed on you
  • Ensure your opening comments are constructive
  • Avoid inflammatory statements
  • Be patient and pace yourself
  • Avoid interruptions or distractions during the mediation
  • Arrange long term car parking
  • Have children looked after by others
  • Ensure any special dietary, health or other needs will be met
  • Eat well before and during the mediation.
  • Have plans that will enable you to keep mediating if it runs over time
  • Follow the guidance and directions of the mediator
  • Seek and utilise the assistance of the mediator
